Conference webcast discussion - last call for interested participants

Tue, 2006-10-31 15:54

Brad Hicks and Paul Reid will be webcasting for the Educational Computing Association of Western Australia's (ECAWA) state conference on Monday the 6th of November. The topic for the webcast will be 'What is the current state of ICT's in education and what can we predict for the future?' The webcast will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. West Australian time (GMT + 8).

We would like to have a number of overseas participants join us for this webcast. We believe that international participants will add to the scope of the discussion and also demonstrate the power of webcasting as a forum for collaborative discussion. If you are able to join us for this discussion I would appreciate confirmation of your participation by e-mailing Brad at [email protected]

Please refer to the attached document for a rough outline of some of the issues that might be discussed during this webcast. The support of the webcasting community would be greatly appreciated. Coversion for local times can be found here

Multiple Mics and Headphones when webcasting

Tue, 2006-10-31 15:45
Has anyone tried a multiple mic and headphone setup? Will be webcasting from a conference next week and may have more than two presenters at the computer that will be streaming. In the past I have manged 2 presenters with a shared USB mic and an RCA splitter for the headphones. So if anyone has any suggestions I'd be interested to hear. And just to make it more interesting - I'll be working on a Mac :-) (but would be interested to hear PC solutions too).

My notes from the Oct. 29th meeting

Mon, 2006-10-30 21:06

I’m listening to the recording of the meeting and taking notes as I go through of the sudden outbursts I would normally share with people in a meeting. Luckily you only get subjected to the sudden bursts of typing, nothing more.

Certification

I like the idea but we would need to make sure that if people are going to use the certification as part of their professional development there needs to be a way to demonstrate the value of the certificate contents and what it took to earn them. A thought is to create a screencast presentation (5 minutes, no more) of the content of the certification that can be used to explain to anyone what the cert. means and what it took to get it. We could work on that as a group and make it part of the final class project.

My brief intro - and problem solved with locating invisible Lame file

Sun, 2006-10-29 21:06
Oh dear. I made my recording in Audacity while we had our webcast session, strongly encouraged by Jeff. I managed to clean out some stuttering and uhms. Then I struggled for quite a while to locate the lame file, which has to be done from inside Audacity when you wish to convert from the .aup format to mp3. I knew this would be tricky as I've had this silly problem before. People have tried patiently to walk me through this, but with no succes - until now! I don't know why it was not unzipped properly in the Aucatity program folder as I wanted it to, and my Search skills are poor with the Windows PC for some reason (being a mac user by origin) At last I thought of opening the EasyZip folder - and there inside ! yes yes yes! I found the much desired Lame folder! No problem :-)

Suggestions on recording screencasts

Sun, 2006-10-29 16:21
Any suggestions/recommendations on software for recording screencasts for playback by users through a web site? I'm not looking for real time playback, but rather for training of adult ed students on technical processes.

Upcoming Meetings and Last Call for the Class of 1.x

Sat, 2006-10-28 19:20
October 28, 2006 Newsletter

Dear Webcast Academy Interns and Registrants,

Thanks to the Class of 1.3 for a great first week of the session. For those who are interested in becoming interns, but have not yet registered or become active, it's still not too late - this is a last call to join the class of 1.x.  If you would like to be considered part of The Webcast Academy Class of 1.x, you need to post an audio introduction by Nov. 1, 11:59pmGMT.  In order to receive the necessary posting privileges, you  will need to have posted a short note on this forum thread expressing your interest.
Everyone is welcome to participate in the community and learn whatever they can from the Webcast Academy site, but only 1.x interns will be able to stream from the Webcast Academy Sandbox Channels and be eligible to receive webcasting certification during the upcoming 1st Academy Certification Council .  For  a discussion about what that means and how to begin posting to your Webcaster Portfolio, please tune in to Webcast Academy Meeting 1.3.2 or listen to the recording. The Class of 2.x is scheduled to begin early in 2007, but the certification council will not meet again for at least 6 months.
At the bottom of this note is a list of those who have applied to be part of the Class of 1.x and those who have posted audio introductions.  If you've posted an audio introduction, but it is not noted, please send a quick email with a link to the mp3 file to [email protected]
Members of the Classes of 1.1 and 1.2, if you have not posted your introductions, please do so if you'd like to receive certification at the upcoming council.

There are two meetings coming up on Sunday, Oct. 29
Please note that daylight savings time ends tonight in many time zones, so we may need to re-adjust our internal GMT calculators.
Brad will be hosting a Mac users session at either either noon or 1pm GMT - stay tuned to the event listing for clarification.
I will be hosting a general meeting at 9amPST/noonEST/5pmGMT (global times).
The agenda includes: Posting Guide, ID3Tags, Info about the Station Module Automatic Archive Update, 1.3 Learning Plan, Open Workshop - Q&A, Troubleshooting
For those who have not yet listened to Meeting 1.3.1, we discussed having mini-meetings and workshops at other times.  All 1.x interns are welcome to schedule and host gatherings at any time.  To do so, simply click 'Create Content/event'.  You can also send a newsletter out to other interns by clicking 'create content/ newsletter) and selecting 'Webcast Academy Intern Newsletter'.

Thanks again to all those who've made the Academy such an interesting place to learn,
Jeff

Using Compendium from Open Learn to visualize...

Fri, 2006-10-27 08:43

Since when we had our webcast i run into Open Learn from Open University...

And their tool Compendium is an easy way to do Mindmaps. They also save in XML and it is programmed in Java so it is not plattformdependent..

http://openlearn.open.ac.uk/

and their Labspace
http://labspace.open.ac.uk/
Screencast for Compendium
http://compendium.open.ac.uk/openlearn/screencasts/index.html

With Compendium we could give our image of the process...

Maybe if everyone do a mindmap so they themself get their clearview of the process. And everyone presenting their mindmap would give everyones view of the process...

Adding a little tunage to your recordings

Thu, 2006-10-26 02:41

If you're like me and like to add a little musical action to your recordings, I'd suggest clicking over to splicemusic.com to create your own sampled MP3 files. I'll post one as soon as it's ready...but not before it's time.

And now for something completely different...

Thu, 2006-10-26 02:07

My introduction for the Webcast Academy. Made using Audacity Portable.

Download MP3 (1.58 MB) 3:27min

Listen here - 1.58 MB 3:27min

Just a side note to all you interns so you don't struggle with this like I did. Make sure that your input format is set to Full HTML rather than Filtered HTML if you're trying to embed a Flash player in your posting. It works much, much better that way!

SpaceCast7 by Lee Ann Baber

Wed, 2006-10-25 23:35

SpaceCast Episode #7 is edited and ready to go. This is one of the better live events for our middle school elgg students (personallearningspace.com) this school year. Paul Allison and I joined Madeline Brownstone for a nice student cast session. The students are starting to get more comfortable with webcasting and seem to be more themselves. We will be discussing ways to help the comfort zone grow for the students and how to guide but not interfere with their "space" and dynamics during the Teachers Teaching Teachers Wednesday. We will skip this week's webcast but will be back on November 3rd at 10:30 am EST. (Click here to subscribe to SpaceCast) I will add one thing about this recording. I had originally set it up for my iTunes Podcast and it was an m4a. Since that is a really large file, I sent it to audacity, then iTunes, then converted it to mp3 again. Well, when editing I had cut some pieces out and left the holes of silence. I forgot to join them before my series of exports since I was teaching and doing this at the same time. As a result you will hear some very obvious audio editing flaws. I am not sure I will fix it right away with more work to do before going back so excuse the quality! Oh my, just another day in the audio editing merry-go-round!

How I could use webcasting

Tue, 2006-10-24 13:36

I have been giving some thought to how I could make use of webcasting skills. The first option which springs immediately to mind is in our Absolutely Intercultural podcasts. I wouldn't want every episode to be a webcast but I can see a place for occasional webcasting on that format.

I have just been asked to lead a project about experiential learning in which I have to deliver inspiring teacher training courses in that area so that struck me as one of the sub-projects my participants could do.

I am also project leader for a European project developing mentor training materials and I had already decided that we would have some online training sessions prior to our next meeting in March and so it is possible that these sessions could be in the form of a webcast.

Audacity behaving strangely

Mon, 2006-10-23 14:51

In preparing my short recording for my intro I mixed down what had been a stereo recording but everytime I opened the file after saving it, it was back to stereo. Strange, I do this all the time but this time it just didn't seem to want to allow me to edit it down to mono. I'll be interested to see what I sent out, mono or stereo?

Experiment with recording both ends of a Skype call? Is it cheating to use Pamela? This is a sKYPE ADD-ON which I use. I paid about 15 $ for it and it seems to work well enough once you have got the trick of dampening down the sound of the caller so that the person you're calling can be heard properly.
