Busan SPCA?
Hi,
I am very interested in adopting a dog, but would prefer not to get one from the pet stores. I was wondering if anyone had any information on a SPCA type organization in Busan, or if anyone knows of a (small) dog that needs a forever home?
Thanks! :)

Carrots and sticks
How can we motivate people to perform optimally? The Dong-A has some ideas:
In the past, public education was centered on punishment. Students got punished when they were tardy, dozed off in class, failed to properly decorate classrooms, and did not wash their hands. Punishment for bad behavior and no reward for good behavior were the standard in education. Rewards, however, is now considered more effective than punishment. The research of Harvard University professor David Rand supports the idea. His team conducted a study in which poor performers got punished in a team and good performers received awards in another team. The latter showed a better performance. The article also describes efforts by New York City mayors Bloomberg and Giuliani. Bloomberg used rewards and punishments to no great success, while Giuliani strictly applied punishments*.
Are carrots and sticks always so useful? Daniel Pink doesn’t think so. In his TED talk, he showed that rewards focus a person’s attention so tightly that the creative connections and insights that come naturally to a relaxed person are ignored. I’ve only started his book, which covers the same ground in more detail. I did discuss his video here.
—————-
* I think these punishments and their effectiveness were described in Freakonomics, in which the authors felt that abortions twenty years previous deserved more credit. While I clearly have not studied the literature as the authors have, I would point out that correlation does not mean causation and the book gave competing theories- and there are many – little space for discussion.

Insurance premiums are gonna be scary!
In Steven King’s short story, “The Running Man”, one of the ways the poor were tormented for the enjoyment of the rich was a medical test, followed by the opportunity to compete in a stressful game. A lot of the stress came from the knowledge that only those with heart problems were invited to play this game. Being invited to play the game was sometimes the news intimation a person had that their health was compromised.
Ah, Wikipedia has the subject covered: The story’s protagonist, Ben Richards, is a citizen of Co-Op City in the year 2025. The world’s economy is in a shambles and America has become a totalitarian dystopia. Richards is unable to find work, having been blackballed, and needs money to get medicine for his gravely ill daughter Cathy. As a last resort, Richards turns to the Games Federation, a government-mandated television station that runs violent game shows (in one game, Treadmill to Bucks, a contestant with a heart or respiratory condition runs on a treadmill earning prize money for the duration of their run, often dying in the process).
I bring this up as a metaphor for the flip side of a very cheery article about genome sequencing that Samsung is about to start*.
You may regard the possibility of foreseeing all the hereditary diseases you could develop in your lifetime and receiving tailor-made prevention or treatment for them as science fiction.
But this is happening in Korea, with conglomerates such as Samsung joining the race. Just seven years after the sequencing of the 3 billion DNA base pairs of the human genome was achieved, the sector business is rapidly emerging as a goldmine for the medical industry.
It would indeed be great if hereditary diseases could be discovered early and treated. However, we are only half-way there. Or, approaching half-way: with DNA sequencing, individuals at risk will be identified early but the treatments still lag. That might be fine if you already have a good health insurance plan, but if you don’t, good luck getting insurance that covers pre-existing conditions’.
I can imagine a Samsung employee,( Samsung has an insurance branch, I think) meeting a candidate for insurance. ”Sure, no problem”, the candidate is told. “Let me swab your mouth a moment.” A few weeks later, the candidate is told, yes, we can give you insurance but it will cost 20% of your salary. In that way, the poor guy learns he will suffer from diabetes within the decade.

Looking for a dog- not a specific breed, but must be small
Hi!
I am interested in getting a dog (and yes, I know this would be a commitment of many years, not months). Breed is not important (i love mutts, and pretty much any type of dog) but it MUST be small..I live in an apartment and due to lack of space could not have a big dog. If anyone knows of a SPCA type place in Busan, please let me know..or, if you have a small dog that needs a home, please contact me.
Thank you!

Photo Classes Begin (Seoul)
From: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=113989325280000&ref=mf
THE COURSE:
Four 3-hour sessions, as well as shooting sessions, photo discussions, and critiques, meeting on 4 consecutive Saturdays from 11am-2pm.
Session 1:
Just the Basics Dealing with the basic operations and functions of your DSLR, explaining each function, button, and doo-hickey. The bulk of the session is likely going to stick around the relationship between aperture and shutter, as well as depth-of-field. Basically everything on your camera has something to do with this relationship.
Session 2:
Composition and Shooting (Shooting Session)
We'll take those examples and look at them on the big screen, while also answering the concrete questions that will pop up about the stuff we learned before. Then we'll talk about composition and other framing issues, including lens lengths and why some lenses are worth $100 bucks and some are worth $10,000.
Session 3:
Flashes and Advanced Exposure (Studio Session)
Dealing with flash, in terms of compensating above and below exposure levels (bracketing), as well as other bracketing techniques in general. We will also be discussing different studio lighting options and then putting them into use.
Session 4: Final Session/Critiques
Keeping it open, field trip using advanced flash and lighting techniques -- locations determined by the weather.
All for 175,000 won. A great price!

A FEW FAQ's:
-- If you are a couple, or are sharing a single camera, I can give you the discount I give anyone who brings in a friend, which is charging you 150,000 each for the class instead of 175,000. But since you're in the class and I want to make sure everyone is taken care of, I do consider you both fully my students. Know what I mean?
-- If you know you are going to miss a session or two, you can stagger. I offer photo classes almost every month, so if you miss a session, you can make it the same session up in a later session. Example, if you miss the #3 session, which is studio, you can wait until the next month and do that #3 session.
-- If you have to suddenly drop out, or miss sessions unexpectedly, I am more than happy to have you attend later, or make up sessions, but I don't do a la carte refunds. If you speak to me BEFOREHAND about partially attending the class or a session, that's fine. Some people with experience behind the camera want to just try out the studio session, for example. We can work that out in advance. Otherwise, if you miss something, I'm more than open to you making it up!

Open Thread #10
Happy to report that I’ve just secured a teaching position at a university, and enjoying the sunny weather, then this photograph seemed apt…
But please feel free to talk about absolutely anything in these open threads; last week, people only talked about my choice of accompanying image instead…not uninteresting of course, but not really my intention!
